Our suggestions
He searches, he thinks, he finds his reward
Hide a few pieces of kibble or treats in the compartments: to reach them, your dog has to slide the lids with his nose or paw and turn the centre of the disc. A real thinking game that keeps him busy, calms him down and works his sense of smell, especially on days when he gets less exercise.
At a glance
- Two mechanisms: six sliding lids around the edge, a centre that rotates
- Medium difficulty: the ideal next step after a snuffle mat, or a challenge for a quick learner
- Slows down meals: he eats a few pieces of kibble at a time, and more slowly
- Two models: wavy disc or bone disc, three colors each
- Rigid plastic that rinses clean easily
How to play
- Show him a treat and drop it into an open compartment while he watches.
- Let him search on his own; the first few times, leave one lid half open.
- Once he has got the idea, close everything and spread the rewards under several lids.
For a gentle start: our snuffle mat. More ideas: all our dog toys.
Which model should I choose?
Both are played the same way: lids to slide and a centre to turn. The wavy disc has a centre in three parts; the bone disc has a bone-shaped centre piece.
Can he play without me?
Stay next to him: it is a thinking game, not a chew toy. Put the puzzle away after the session, especially if he starts nibbling the pieces.
How do I clean it?
Rinse it in warm soapy water, then let it air dry before putting it away.
My dog ate chocolate: is it serious?
It depends on its weight, the type of chocolate and the amount: a square of milk chocolate does nothing to a 10 kg dog, a bar of 70% dark can kill it. Our guide my dog ate chocolate does the maths and gives the numbers to call.
Does the puzzle slow down a dog that eats too fast?
It slows and occupies: part of the ration hidden under the sliders is eaten piece by piece. Start with the sliders open, then close them one at a time; take the game away as soon as it chews it. The other habits that slow down a meal are in our article on the dog that eats too fast.
