Its microchip number, read in one second

In France, dogs and cats are identified by an electronic microchip placed under the skin. This microchip reader shows its 15-digit number as soon as you pass it over the animal: to check that your dog's or cat's chip still responds before a trip, to note the number of a found animal, or for breeders and rescues identifying their animals.

Key points

  • ISO 11784/11785 (FDX-B) chips, the standard for dogs and cats in Europe, and EMID chips
  • OLED screen: the full 15-digit number, with a beep at each reading
  • Memory of 128 readings, transferable to a computer via USB
  • USB rechargeable battery
  • Contactless: it reads the chip through the coat

How to find the chip

  1. Switch the reader on and bring it to the left side of the neck, where chips are placed in France, or between the shoulder blades.
  2. Pass it slowly against the coat, drawing small "S" shapes over the neck and shoulders: the chip is read when it passes under the loop.
  3. At the beep, note the number shown. Nothing appears? Widen the area: a chip sometimes migrates towards the shoulder.

Found an animal? The number does not give the owner's details: take it to a vet or a rescue, who will check the French national register I-CAD. If your own cat has gone missing, our lost cat guide explains what to do.
