Our suggestions

Know whether it has a fever before calling the vet

A listless dog, a cat that ignores its bowl: the vet's first question will often be "does it have a fever?". This digital thermometer gives you the answer in about a minute, to a tenth of a degree. Its flexible tip follows the shape of the body and makes the reading gentler for your dog or your cat.

Key points

  • Reading to a tenth of a degree, from 32 to 42.9 °C
  • Flexible tip, stainless steel probe
  • Beep when the reading is done
  • 12.6 cm and 9 g: it fits in the first-aid kit
  • 3 colors: blue, yellow or pink

How to take your pet's temperature

  1. Switch the thermometer on and put a little petroleum jelly on the tip.
  2. Gently lift the tail and insert the tip into the anus, about 2 cm deep (a little less for a cat or a small dog), holding it in place.
  3. Wait for the beep, remove the thermometer, read it, then clean the tip with soapy water or alcohol.

It is easier with two people: one holds and reassures the animal, the other takes the reading.

What is a normal temperature?

In dogs, between 38 and 39 °C; in cats, between 38 and 39.2 °C. A temperature that stays above 39.5 °C, goes over 40 °C or drops below 37 °C is a reason to call your vet. The thermometer does not replace the vet's advice: it helps you give them accurate information.
