Our suggestions
A scratching post as good as new, without buying a new cat tree
The sisal on a scratching post always ends up frayed, while the structure itself is still sound. This natural sisal rope lets you rewrap a worn post, on a cat tree or a standalone scratcher, or make a scratcher on a table leg or a tube. Sisal is the fibre cats prefer to scratch: rough, strong, and it does not tear off in pieces.
Key points
- Natural sisal, straw-coloured, twisted
- 6 mm diameter, the usual thickness on cat tree posts
- 3 lengths: 10 m, 20 m or 50 m
- Easy to fix: hot glue or staples at both ends
Which length should I choose?
As a guide, on a 9 cm diameter post, each turn uses about 30 cm of rope and rises by 6 mm: allow about 5 m of rope per 10 cm of height. So 10 m rewraps the lower part of a post (about twenty centimetres), 20 m about 40 cm, and 50 m a one-metre post or several small posts. Measure the diameter of your post: the thicker it is, the more rope you need.
How to rewrap a post
Remove the old sisal and staples, then fix the start of the rope at the bottom of the post with a dot of hot glue or a staple. Wind it on, pressing each turn tightly against the previous one, adding a dot of glue about every ten turns, and finish with a dot of glue and a staple at the top, out of reach of the claws.

Does it smell when you open it?
Natural sisal has a slight plant-fibre smell, which fades within a few days in the open air.
Can it be used for anything else?
Yes: table leg, banister, basket or decoration. For a scratcher, keep the winding tight, with no gaps between turns.
My cat ignores the rewrapped post
Put it near its napping spot or the place it already scratches, and rub a toy or a treat on it to attract it.
How much rope to re-cover a post?
About 10 m of 6 mm rope for a 60 cm post 9 cm across, 20 m for two. The method for winding, and why you keep the worn tree: our guide cat tree: which one to choose.
